Annual Salary Range:

Recreation Coordinator: $69,804 - $92,839

Sr. Recreation Coordinator: $75,159 - $99,961

 

This position is part of a flexible classification.  Qualified candidates may be hired at either level based on their experience, education and training as determined by the hiring authority.

DESCRIPTION

Tempe’s Parks and Recreation Division is seeking a passionate and dedicated Adaptive Recreation Coordinator to develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive recreational programs designed to enhance the quality of life for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. As the Adaptive Recreation Coordinator, you will play a pivotal role in creating inclusive and engaging recreational opportunities. You will be responsible for the full spectrum of program management, from development and implementation to evaluation and budgeting. Through the Adaptive Recreation Program, you will ensure that individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities have access to enriching experiences that promote social interaction, physical activity, and personal growth. 

 

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

 

Program Development & Implementation

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a diverse range of recreational programs, including after-school programs, summer camps, social programs, Special Olympics, and other activities and events.
  • Administer program surveys for stakeholder feedback; review and assess results and implement program updates, as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of recreation trends and new developments in the field of adaptive recreation, incorporating new developments as appropriate into existing programs.

 

Program Administration & Operations

  • Establish and implement policies and procedures for efficient program operation.
  • Supervise the registration, collection of fees, and required paperwork for adaptive recreational activities, events, programs and/or facility use.
  • Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing activities, events, programs, and their effectiveness.
  • Maintain records for registrations and fees collected; maintain and file accident reports; prepare statistical reports as required.
  • Adhere to participant and program standards as required by City of Tempe, as well as State of Arizona and other partner agencies.
  • Maintain applicable compliance licenses.

 

Team Leadership & Management

  • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate volunteer, permanent, and seasonal staff.
  • Maintain appropriate staff-to-participant ratios.
  • Supervise the scheduling of all reporting staff and volunteers.
  • Work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement disciplinary procedures when necessary.

 

 

 

Collaboration & Partnerships

  • Participate actively in inter-city events and committees.
  • Work closely with non-profit and partner agencies, school officials, and city staff regarding adaptive recreation activity, event, and program offerings and coordination of services.
  • Act as liaison with school and community agencies to coordinate joint facility use or program agreements.

 

Contract & Budget Management

  • Manage and administer contracts and agreements related to Adaptive Recreation programs, including State of Arizona Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), Special Olympics Arizona, and other applicable contractual arrangements.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance, tracking key dates and deliverables, and facilitating communication between parties for all Adaptive Recreation agreements and contracts.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of the annual Adaptive Recreation budget.
  • Prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for budget items; monitor and control Adaptive Recreation program expenditures and revenues.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Work Experience:
Requires two (2) years of experience in the implementation and coordination of adaptive recreational, social, and cultural programs and activities, including experience supervising adaptive recreation activities.

Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year).  The sum of an applicant’s full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience. 

 

Education:

Requires the equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation, recreation administration, education or degree related to the core functions of this position.

The term “equivalent” means that directly related work experience exceeding the required work experience will substitute in equal time increments for college-level education, for example: one year of additional directly related work experience will substitute for one year of college education (30 credit hours).

 

Certifications, Licenses, and/or Registrations:

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Possession of, or required to obtain, First Aid and CPR certification, Article 9 training and Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Required to obtain within two (2) years of hire, a certification in Adaptive Recreation.
  • Preferred certifications: Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)
